Can I drink juice to induce sleep?

Drink company Tri-State Juice Co., is distributing a new “anti-energy” drink dubbed Drank, marketed as an antidote to the caffeinated, stressed-out lives many Americans lead.

Milford-based Tri-State Juice signed a distribution partnership with Drank’s maker, Houston-based Innovative Beverage Group Holdings. It is being marketed to solve a variety of sleep and relaxation problems, such as nervousness, anxiety and insomnia. Specific groups are being targeted as well, including professionals with high-stress jobs, athletes, travelers who suffer from jet lag and overworked students.

This carbonated, grape-flavored beverage boasts three main active ingredients: melatonin, rose hips, and valerian root. Melatonin is a hormone created in the brain that regulates sleep patterns and can be purchased as an over-the-counter sleep aid in pill form. Valerian root and rose hips are herbal supplements that also have been used to reduce the effects of nervousness; rose hips are commonly used in tea.

Links to information on the additives used can be found on the beverage’s Web site, here. Drank can also be purchased at various convenience stores and 7-Elevens around the country.

Tri-State Juice Co. distributes a number of beverages, including AriZona Iced Tea, Nantucket Nectars and Jones Soda. The company distributes to 1,500 retail stores in the Midwest.
